It slowed down when it reached the ninth floor and the door opened following a swift chime. Only then did Liam let go of her. He put his arms around her and pressed her head close to his chest. Caprice was still drunk with passion when she noticed another person stepping into the elevator.

Dr. Helena asked as soon as she saw us, with the familiarity of someone who had been following us for a few visits now. "I heard about the little elevator incident." I felt my face heat up with embarrassment, but she kept talking, a playful smile on her lips. "Actually, I heard about the dad who jumped into the elevator so his wife wouldn't be alone and scared," she said, looking at Marcus with clear approval. "I thought it was very romantic."

ELARA POV The elevator climbed in a silence so heavy it felt like the air had been sucked out of the small space. I watched the floor numbers flicker on the display—70, 71, 72—my heart thumping in time with the soft mechanical hum. Beside me, Alaric stood perfectly still. He had loosened his collar earlier, but he still looked like a man made of stone. The scent of his cologne, a mix of rain-soaked wood and expensive leather, filled the small space, making my head spin. Every time the elevator jolted slightly, our shoulders brushed, sending a jolt through my skin that had nothing to do with the gala.
