"Aren't you sad?" She shrugged. "It's just stuff. I can make more stuff." "What about the people? A lot of people just died!" Ellie kept walking. "How long have you lived there? How many of those people did you know? And now it's just gone." Ellie stopped and turned. Her brown eyes studied his face for a moment and her mouth twisted to the side in thought. "Yes, I will miss those people and it is sad. But this is war. Right now, the enemy has won this battle and standing here mourning won't change anything, except slow us down and get us caught. Those people, the ones that bombed us, are going to be counting the bodies and when they find a lot more stuff than bodies, they are going to be sea

The dining room table was too long for two people who weren't talking. Ellie sat three chairs down from me, her fingers turning a piece of dry toast over and over on her plate without taking a bite. She had dressed for the charity gallery in a plain cream dress that made her look even thinner than she was. Her hair was pulled back, tight and neat, but the gray light from the tall window showed the faint blue shadows under her eyes. "You need to eat," I said. My own coffee had gone cold twenty minutes ago.

Then she smiled a soft smile— warm on the outside, burning on the inside: “Do you remember… how warm I was?” Adel shot her a warning look, terrified that Naomi might catch even a single word. But Nelly was no longer a woman who feared anything. She had become something else entirely… A woman who knew her weapon, knew her strength, and knew she held one card that could change everything— The marriage contract they had signed together. She was practicing her rights as a woman and a wife… with a boldness that knew no shame,

"When do I expect you? In case there's something I need to get ready for you." Ellie thought about that and said, "In the next three days I should be there." Then she ended the call, looked to the ceiling and let out a deep sigh. She knew what she was getting herself into. And Ellie was aware that there would be no going back on it. She wasn't just going to be enacting revenge on David Whitehall alone. She would be doing the same to Lily Summers, her own sister. *** The next morning, Ellie went to her boss's office and requested an issuance for the transfer of her position to the new branch.
