I’ve been in this field since I was nine. I’m fifty-five now. So no, there’s nothing you’ll bring to the table I haven’t already tasted.”

Carrie took a step down again in fear but this time she missed her footing and stumbled back. “Ahhh!" Carrie shouted and Jade quickly gripped her hand. Jade looked down at Carrie who was trying to hold on the her hand in other not to fall off. She enjoyed the look of horror in her eyes. “ Didn't I say you should watch your back?” Jade asked. " Please pull me up, Jade. Please I beg you.” Carrie pleaded, tears streamed down her face. Jade enjoyed watching her cry and beg. " Please.” Carrie said again. She could clearly see Jade slowly filling up with satisfaction and she caught the glimpse of revenge that flashed in her eyes before it disappeared quickly. "No.” Carrie shook her head.

We just woke up one day, they're all gone. Carrie stayed with us in the basement until she was twenty-four. We awoke one morning to find her dead. She didn't wake up; she died of hunger after starving herself for months; she was right that I was braver than her; she gave up; she didn't keep her promise to us that she'd wait until we earned Mama's trust. I hated her for giving up. She was the reason why I was pushing to accomplish my promise to her. I wasn't a keeper, but Carrie was special to me and I thought of her as my mother so I still continued what I had started. I loved Carrie, and I would never forget her.
