I am the shadows. Humans like to fear what they do not understand. They do not want to face their shadows, because that means staring straight into the unknown. But there is nothing wrong with darkness. It is not evil or cold. It is not the end of all things, it is the beginning. It is rebirth. I am no longer afraid to embrace my true nature. I am ready to become the darkness incarnate. The Queen of Night. With nothing left to lose, there is nothing to keep the darkness contained. Fueled by my need to react, to find and protect those I love, I pull myself up, the shadows in my room flexing and contracting with the movement of my hands and legs, moving with my breath.

He throws Kael against the wall and turns to me. "You are strong," he says. "But you are not strong enough." "Maybe not. But I am not alone." I reach inside myself. “The truth you deny.” Her mother’s words echoed in her mind: *“Remember who you are.”* Jessica focused, not on destroying the shadow but on understanding it.
