By the time headlights swept across our driveway, I nearly jumped. My dad called from the kitchen, “You going out, Em?”
“Yeah,” I said, grabbing my small purse. “Just a movie.”
He smiled knowingly. “Be back before ten-thirty.”
Outside, Connor’s car idled in the soft orange glow of the streetlight. He stepped out when he saw me, dressed in a simple black shirt and jeans, his hair slightly messy — effortlessly perfect.
