Every chapter had mattered. But none of them had defined me alone. Debris and freezing wind, as well as an overwhelming, draconic pressure, crashed down from above. A tall figure descended. Golden hair, golden-slitted pupils, and scales faintly emerged across the figure’s body. His features were sharp, cold, and utterly inhuman. He was the Dragon Emperor. He stood amid the ruins, his gaze like a blade, locking directly onto the golden tail around my ankle. My brain was completely short-circuited. The next second, a small, golden figure shot up from the bed. The little guy transformed mid-air into his dragon form—a small, golden-scaled dragon—and blocked the opening.

People made up all sorts of wild guesses. All over the land, people looked towards the capital with a mix of awe and worry. The Emperor had returned, and he had brought an order that would change Kaldor completely. The old ways were being questioned, and the future, for the first time in a long time, felt unsure, hard to predict, and strangely, excitingly, alive. And somewhere, in the dark parts of the royal palace, I waited, wondering how this Liora would react when she found out that the man she saved, the man she promised to care for, was the Emperor who had now declared her his Empress.
