It wasn’t my true reason, but it was a plausible enough excuse. Magnus studied me for a moment, then nodded, a small smile playing on his lips.
“Fair enough,” he said, stepping aside as if granting me leave to go.
At that moment, Mirabel appeared, rushing toward me with hurried steps. She was young, perhaps eighteen, with striking blonde hair that framed her youthful face. Her wide-eyed eagerness was apparent, though it only deepened my curiosity.
