The magic within
She carried a bundle of scrolls, dust thick on the vellum, her hands shaking.
“Stop,” she snapped, louder than either of them. “He is still Daryl. And if we want him to remain that way, we need this.”
By torchlight, Maera unfurled the brittle parchment across the altar. The ink was faded, but the drawings were clear enough — a great circle, glyphs carved in a spiral, two figures standing within.
“It’s a severance rite,” she explained, her voice thin with exhaustion. “An old one. Not meant to destroy the vault, but to break its tether to chosen vessels.” She looked meaningfully at Daryl. “It’s the only way.”
