The Warrior Queen Returns
It seemed like we were all holding our breath, making sure that things really had ended.
And then, the thin, high note of a bird swirled through the woods, bouncing off of the branches. The smaller animals had returned to the forest. The fight really was over.
“We won,” someone said in disbelief. “The war is over! We won!”
The voices of our troops spun together, murmurs that eventually grew into a resounding cheer. Warriors hugged each other, shook hands, and clapped each other on the back in celebration.
I grinned as I watched them celebrate, but my eyes fell on Harrison, and my smile quickly dimmed. He was standing with his shoulders slumped, head down, staring at the forest floor.
