Martha was still there, slumped against her pillar, exhausted but alive.
The mercenaries who had been following the water—men in black tactical gear and breathing masks—were floating in the water, their weapons useless. They weren't dead, but they were trapped in the shimmering, thickened water, unable to move.
Alaric looked at his hands. He looked at me. He looked like a god who had just remembered he was once a man.
"It's over," he whispered.
"No," I said, looking up at the skylight. I could hear the helicopters circling above. I could hear the Council members screaming into their radios. "The flood was the end of the old world. Now, we go to the surface and start the new one."
