We had Night Blood on standby. With them and the amount of Dark Moon members that came we should be more than prepared for whatever comes. At least, I hope we're prepared enough but there's no telling. Hopefully I'm just overreacting. We continued walking to the castle. The people inside the walls of the kingdom watched us as we did. I couldn't get a clear reading on their energies as we passed by them too quickly, but something was telling me to not trust them.

“For 363 days.” He searched my face, then let go like I’d burned him. He didn’t touch me again for the rest of the drive. That night, I found a book on my nightstand. The Art of War. No note. I opened it. On the first page, in black ink, sharp and precise: Rule six: Enemies are everywhere. Trust no one. Not even me. I closed the book and looked at the camera in the corner. Red light, blinking. Always blinking.

'Also send a few up to observe any actions within their pack from my lookout point, but make sure they treat the area with the utmost respect.'

The car drove toward the Iron Gate, and the Alpha’s villa of the Litha Night Walker Pack stood as organized and pristine as Eloise remembered it. She couldn’t help but glance over her shoulder. Through the back window, she watched the black Iron Gate slowly close behind her. From today on, I'm just a caged bird. She closed her eyes, forcing back the tears that threatened to spill. When she opened them again, she was obedient Eloise once more. Ainsley caught every flicker of emotion on her face, and for a fleeting moment, guilt flashed through his eyes.

ZAC'S POV The eastern gate is a ten minute walk from the council building and I make it in seven. The visitor is sitting on a low stone bench just inside the gate with a pack guard standing two feet away from her. She is young, maybe twenty, and travel-worn in the way that means she has been walking for more than a day. She is wrapped in a thin cloak that is not warm enough for the evening air and her hands are folded in her lap and she is sitting very still the way people sit when they are trying not to look afraid.

My back hit first, knocking the air out of me. “Because we’re enemies. I should be the one ending you.” Isabella’s breath came quick, her palms pressed flat on my chest, I caught both of her wrist before she could react. “Too bad.” She opened her mouth to retort, but before another word could leave her lips, I closed the distance between us. “I guess we’re just enemies in disguise,” I murmured, my breath brushing against her lips, “waiting for whatever lies ahead of us.”

And the freezing morning air too… I dragged my shivering self and hurt foot to my chambers. Shutting the doors gave me a strange feeling of peace, and safety. It was only here, hopefully, I won't turn against myself soon. The firm knock on my door jolted me out of my thoughts. Reluctant at first, I resigned and walked to open after five series of relentless knocks. As I reached for the door, it opened wide hitting my hurt toe again… I was done crying silently, I fell to the ground holding my toe. It was Alpha Drake who'd been knocking. He rushed to me immediately…

He went alone. He always went alone. No driver waiting at the gate. No Marcus with a schedule. No phone calls stacked behind it. Just Damien and his car and the grey morning pressing down on the city like it hadn't decided yet whether to rain. Greywood Cemetery was forty minutes outside the city. He knew every turn by heart. She took out her data tablet and saw that the door was double locked. "Amelia get busy, those guards aren't complete idiots. I know they're going to figure out that they aren't chasing a ghost or something." She continued to look down the corridor as the guards turned around and instantly spotted her. She shot at the them trying to give Amelia more time, none of her shots connected which made her utter several curses as the guards closed the distance. She looked at the data tablet and saw that Amelia was halfway finished unlocking the door. She looked back up at the guards who were almost on her. She fired at them again as one of them reached her. He swung at her head connecting with her jaw

“I won’t beat her, but… I’ll handle it.” Lydia’s eyes lifted slightly. “Thank you, Brian.” He crouched down a little to meet her gaze. “Next time she touches your books or talks to you like that you go to the teacher and then come to me?” Lydia nodded. But before Brian could say anything else A motorcycle engine rumbled at the gate. A tall guy came down as he pulled off his helmet with an aggravated exhale, eyes scanning for Lydia. His dark brown hair flowed in the wind. When he spotted her, his shoulders relaxed but then he saw who she was standing with. He saw the tears on her face.
