This side of him was foreign to me and I didn’t want to deal with something that I wasn’t familiar with. Do you have to do this?” Colton stared at her. “You read yours, and we’ll read ours.” She pouted and didn’t reply. She read it again. Slowly this time, with the pen she had recapped now uncapped again, marking the margins with the small precise notations she used when she was reading something that required her to track multiple things simultaneously — the surface meaning, the implied meaning, the structural consequences, the places where language that seemed straightforward produced outcomes that were anything but. By the time she reached page thirty-one her margin notes were dense and specific and the picture they produced, assembled together, was exactly what her instincts had been telling her it would be from the moment Mara had set the document on her desk.

"This ... I don't understand." Blaze puts his head closer to see which sentence that made me confused, then he explained it more concisely and simply until I understand.
