I ran my fingers over the glossy image before turning my attention to the writing on the back of the first page. ‘You and your mate will be able to heal each other with your bond. I sat up, looking at my blankets. Blood was everywhere, groaning I stood and headed outside. “Why is there a Berserker in my camp?” I asked Thana as Sáta and General Abtez jumped, turning to look at me.

I returned the book from the bookshelf it was taken from. While walking out of the library, I couldn't help but go back to what I had read. After the war, some vampires started to kill humans. It was not enough for them to drink blood from people, they killed people indiscriminately. The world leaders complained, but the purebloods turned a blind eye to everything. So, in retaliation to that, the world leaders created the Hunters Association. It was a group of humans highly trained to kill supernatural beings.

I don’t want to start imagining things, but I can’t help it. Hunter and I seem to be the only survivors after all. And he’s the one looking macabre amongst us both. Gods and Goddesses, please tell me what I’m thinking isn’t true. Tell me Hunter didn’t do this. Bring the murderer before my eyes, so I can be a bit consoled because I cannot deal with this. I just can’t. There’s enough I can take for a week. And this… this is way past my limit that I want to lay atop sun-beaten sand and let the concrete scrape off the memories. Reset the things I’ve just now seen.

Waving her hand over her shoulder, all the other women began to march out of the hut, leaving Elaine and Pappi behind. “What do you remember?” Hina grumbled. I paused and stiffened as the last conversation came flooding back to my memory. I glared over at Pappi. “This idiot thinks my daughter is still alive and you think that she is the Tipple Goddess” I grumbled waving my hands between Pappi and Hina. “Watch your tongue” Hina growled stepping closer to me. I huffed and looked down at my lap. I’m surrounded by nitwits. They were hunters. Trained, strategic, vicious hunters. How could a thirteen-month-old child survive? Survive them.

It was protecting its children from the zombie horde. Even zombies instinctively protected their offspring. And yet my own sister spent every waking moment plotting against me. I remembered waking in the forest, the claw marks, the missing memories and the growing sense that something inside me was changing. "What am I then?" I asked quietly.

I pretended not to notice. I approached a girl, about 14, with a toddler beside her. “Hi, what’s your name?” I asked gently. “Michelle,” she replied shyly. “Hi Michelle. I’m Max. Are you doing okay? Need medical attention?” “We’re okay. This is Cammy, my sister. We’re not from any of the other packs. I don’t know why we were taken.” “What pack are you from so we can call your parents?” “Our parents were killed trying to save me. Cammy was taken first.” Then in a whisper she said, “I don’t want to go back.”

My stomach dropped. "What?" He nodded. "I hired investigators to find you after you dared to run from me that morning. It took them a week to find you." Something was slamming hard against my rib cage in a really violent way. I knew what it was. My heart. "I found out who you were—Matteo Leone, a twenty three year old bisexual man, living in your father's house like a prisoner." He leaned forward slightly. "I learned everything about you—your urm... useless family, and your situation within hours of funding you."

, Croads, a middle-aged woman with brown hair and glasses, said. Except, it's not. She's dealing with enough right now. "Are you close with the victim?", SSA Briggs questioned, looking at me curiously. Briggs is practically a teenager, with shaggy blonde hair, very thin. "She's not a victim. Don't call her that. Her name is Amelia, and she's a survivor", I couldn't stop the words from flowing from my mouth. "The only one", Briggs uttered. "So you are close to her? Have you considered that being the reason for not catching him yet?", Croads said coldly. "Croads", Loveless snapped, shaking his head at her.
