ETHAN: The car ride was silent as Pete drove ahead to my house inside White Estate. My head throbbed with thoughts of Eva, and I needed to take a break from the office to think clearly. Did I make a mistake asking Eva to work for me? Should I not have employed her? When Pete arrived at my mansion, he waited for security to unlock the gate before driving into my residence and parking. “Sir, about the partners from the Johnson group—should I deliver the document to you here or keep it at the company?” Pete asked respectfully as I unfastened my seatbelt to step out of the car.

I laughed as I put my arms around my mate, “This is Evan of the Mer people. He is Taylor’s mate.” Elliot smiled, “Dude! It’s been a long time!” He fist-bumped Evan and Evan smiled, “It’s been too long! I take it Elisa is your mate?” Elliot nodded, “She is. Come in the house. I have a shirt for you.” We all went to the house. They all went in while Abel and I hung back.

I tried to speak, but my throat was so dry. Eve quickly leaned closer and gave me a sip of water. "Don’t speak, just eat.” Her face was pale, but she forced a gentle smile. I looked up at her and whispered, "Eve, you’re alive. I’m so glad." She nodded, tears in her eyes, and tore off another piece of meat, pressing it to my lips. I clenched my mouth shut, shaking my head frantically. Eve’s gaze was firm. "Emma, you need to stay alive. There’s hope as long as you’re alive."

The atmosphere inside grew more awkward and intense. Caroline felt the urge to run, but her feet seemed frozen in place. Liora and Tyler examined Evan and their mother. Evan approached Caroline, and his voice shook slightly as he asked, "Who are you?" Caroline suppressed her panic and answered coldly, "You must be bored, sir. How many times are you going to ask this question?" With certainty in his tone but disbelief in his gaze, Evan insisted, "You're Caroline Shenton, right?" Caroline frowned due to his unusually emotional expression—she had never seen him like this before. He seemed doubtful yet relieved as if he had finally found someone he had been searching for.

A light smack from Esther's tiny hand didn't hurt physically, but it cleaved his heart in two. His dark eyes bore into Esther's. He didn't like children, let alone James' kid. But every time he saw Esther, he didn't despise her mischief, and instead found her strangely endearing. Perhaps she reminded him of a young Beverly, and the feeling was comforting as it was familiar. Just then, two police officers on duty approached them and put a hand to Evan's chest, shoving him away. "Mr. Gray, you're not allowed to get close to Ms. Sinclair."

Ethan stood beside me, jacket slung over his arm, eyes sharp and observant. “He’s going to try something today,” he said quietly. “I know,” I replied. “He doesn’t have many moves left.” “And the ones he does have?” Ethan asked. “Desperation,” I said. “Ego.” Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Those are dangerous tools.” The doors opened. And there he was. Evan stood at the defense table, head bent slightly as he reviewed his papers. He looked… thinner. Not physically though maybe that too but like something essential had been worn down. His suit was impeccable as always, but the precision felt forced, like armor held together by habit rather than confidence.

His presence is intimidating, completing his polished look and his aura of refinement and luxury. He grasps Elodie's chin gently, lifting it so that their eyes meet. “It's a shame you don't know me.” He pauses before declaring, “I'm Evan, baby girl, Evan Landers,” An underground casino owner with lots and lots of criminal records. He and Kendrick aren't particularly friends but they aren't enemies either. At least not until a few years ago when he incurred a huge loss because of Charlotte back when she was dating Kendrick. Now that she's dead, Evan has no choice but to shift his grudge over to her wealthy ex-boyfriend: Kendrick.
