The vow escaped my lips, tinged with conviction as I closed my eyes. As darkness enveloped me, I felt the sensation of drowning, a force pushing me down into frigid depths, suppressing my escape. Voices echoed my name, growing louder. ‘Happy birthday, Sia.’ my father’s voice called from the surface. I fought against the weight, striving to reach him, but the grip around my ankle was relentless. ‘Dad!’ I choked, bubbles escaping my mouth as water rushed in. Worse yet, I had nothing with me but my float—no way to call for help that anyone could hear. But I had to shout. Maybe someone would hear me. “Is anyone there? Help…” I drifted farther out, a wave crashing over me, pulling me underwater before I managed to come back up clinging to my float. After bobbing up and down for a while, I was almost in despair. Was I really going to die here today? Another wave pulled me under, but then, a pair of arms grabbed me. I couldn’t open my eyes underwater. The feeling of drowning made me exhausted and terrified. The water was silent; all I could hear was my heartbeat.

It feels as though I am being stabbed by numerous knives all at once all over my body I am unable to move my flesh my limbs remain fastened to my sides the pain is intolerable as a raw disturbing scream parts my mouth underwater whilst I gag as large amounts of icy water is forcibly rammed down my throat. My heavy winter attire has soaked up so much of it and is pulling me down stirring me in another direction. Yes, I remember that feeling. It isn't merely about not being able to breathe. It is a slow death where despite one trying to reach the surface, the miracle never comes until...the person who bounds them to the bottom of the ocean sets them free.

I scream underneath the water as I fight for air that I desperately need. My gaze swims around trying to search for Julia. I shiver in fear when I can see nothing at all. A hand attaches to my shoulder and I struggle against it. I am quickly running out of air. As my eyes close for what I think will be my final moment, I hear a soft voice on the waves. Remember.

I pressed both hands against the glass and screamed their names until my throat gave out and there was nothing below us but fire and dark ocean and the sinking structure of the rig going under. No figures on the platform. No movement in the water. Nothing.

The force pulls at me just as I grab the stump but it’s too strong. Gasping for breath and panicking, I fight against the relentless force that threatens to drag me deeper into the icy river. The darkness of the water envelops me, and I can feel the cold seeping into my bones as I desperately cling to the wooden stump, my fingers slipping against the wet surface. I’m too heavy to stay afloat. I know I’m going to drown because of this fucking gown! As fear and despair grip me, my thoughts race to Alec. Where is he? Why isn't he coming to my rescue? My mate should sense the danger I'm in. My heart pounds in my chest, and my vision blurs as I struggle to stay afloat.

I take another step, then another and another until I'm knee-deep in the water. The hem of my black summer dress is already soak. I hear my name in the waves, it sounds like a gurgle. Then I see her. Sunny felt hands tugging her under as she felt the tips of their claws digging into her legs. Sunny's heart raced with fear as she struggled to break free from the grip of the unknown. Panic consumed her as she desperately fought against the force pulling her deeper into the water. With each passing moment, Sunny's strength waned, and the realization of her dire situation sank in. Her lungs burned for air as darkness closed in around her, threatening to swallow her whole. She knew that time was running out, and she clung to hope.

Misshapen and ill-sized, my limbs flail as my body reframes itself, shrinking away from the pain, becoming what I once was. But I am no sea dragon. An earth dragon’s talons are useless in the ocean. So I fall like a stone. Desperately, I push against the currents, willing myself to kick, to rise, but I’m too weak against the undercurrents and find myself drawn deeper, and deeper, into the cold. I gasp for air, but there is none. Only water and darkness. I am drowning. I am dying. Until I see a star.
