My words shattered Zac. For more than a decade, he had lived as the cherished child of the family. He had always believed it was the younger brother's birth that had divided his parents' love. A soft hand reached up from the front row-an older woman with kind eyes-and handed me a handkerchief. I took it with trembling fingers and whispered a thank you. The fabric was warm and smelled faintly of lavender. It grounded me.

His words were filled with remorse, as if such promises could earn my forgiveness. But instead of replying, I calmly took out my phone and played a recording. I draped her pancakes with honey and dropped it on the table right in front of her, serving it with a glass of milk, after which I went back to the kitchen and had mine with a cup of hot chocolate. No one was at the hospital when I got there, and luckily for me, I brought a book along, so I sat right beside the bed and started reading the book. The book was “ My Father's Wish” by Bellaboy, a touching story of how a young man, Hunter, was set up by his late father's will to marry his middle school bully, Hazel, just so that he; Hunter, could claim his inheritance.

Then he headed down to the living room. Theodore and Jonathan were in the living room reading a newspaper. “Good morning, did you sleep well?” They indicated that they didn’t sleep well, they were thinking about their sister-in-law and the babies. He told them that he was tossing and turning, blaming himself for bringing harm to his daughter in love. The Housekeeper and Tamara were busy preparing breakfast. Theodore was reading the newspaper aloud. They were shocked when they saw the first page. It was about how the Edwards Group was founded.

(Elisa’s POV) I loved how my life turned out. One minute, I was lying beside the road with a bullet wound from people I thought were my friends, and here I was living a life of crime and loving it. I looked at my watch, realizing how late I was to get to the restaurant, and said, “I have to go. I need to run the books for my bar and restaurant.” I turned to Lorenzo and asked, “Are you coming?” I asked since he had insisted on tagging along.

It was a large book, which had no title, but looked more like a large diary. May spoke nothing of the book to either me or mother, who were both present on the occasion, but took the unknown book to her room. She spent the whole day engrossed in this volume. I knew she took time to read it, for when I brought up her tea, she asked me to have the tea placed on the table, and without taking her eyes off the page, thanked me and asked me to leave the room. I was convinced, that whatever was concerned in that book must be something that I was not allowed to know about, and that I was determined to find out.

“We are loosing,” I walked away as well to clear my head. I traced his scent to his study, looking through the books like there wasn't something catastrophic going on. “How can you read right now?” I asked, distracting him from the book. “There are over a hundred people out there, waiting to see you fall and you are in here reading books?” “Not just reading…” he turned the book to me. “... researching. This is the ruby we found, a priceless piece because it's not from our world,”

"Explain it to me. Please." She pulled a thick, navy-blue medical book from the stack and flipped it open with shaking hands. "The drugs your father used..." Her voice cracked, failing her. A cold, numbing wave washed over me. I balled my free hand into a fist. "Tell me." She met my eyes, her own filled with raw pain. "I think the damage is permanent." The room went deathly still. The air felt heavy, like water filling my lungs. Seconds stretched into forever.
