Dust motes floated in the air like lazy ghosts. Eva led me to the tall bookshelf behind the principal’s desk. “Help me move it.” she said. Together, we shoved. The shelf groaned like it resented being disturbed, inching aside to reveal a metal door, cool and strange, etched with glowing runes that pulsed faintly in the dark. I stared, breath catching in my throat. “How did you move this alone the first time?” “I didn’t,” she said, voice flat. “I had help.”

The Administrator’s form contracted, screens and pages drawing tighter, code‑threads coiling. Then it struck. Whole rows of shelves around the clearing jerked to life, wrenching themselves up from the ground like they were on invisible hinges. It looked like a diary that was written by someone to another person. The fonts were neatly written along the lines of the book.

Eva comes and adds another book. This continues for a few minutes before Eva gives up. She’d kept ten books balanced easily. Her neck aches, but she has clearly shown the poise Eva is looking for. Eva takes the books back, and asks Celine to do the same thing, this time without the books. Eva watches closely, but seems to find no fault in how she was walking now. Eva nods, and holds out three different and slightly thicker books.
