he said firmly. Just then, the strangers who were fighting us came to a halt as someone stepped out from among the tall trees. Whoever this was, he commanded some sort of respect from the rogues who had been about to attack us. He stood tall and almost intimidatingly. His left eye was covered with some sort of eye patch and I didn't fail to miss the brutal scar on the top left of his eyebrow.

They throw empty plastic bottles at him. He froze and glared at them. “Here’s the head you are asking.” They stared at it and Stiles even removed the eyepatch to see the scar on her eyes. Those eyes looked alive and staring back at him. “Job well done. Now, throw it away.” He said as he tossed the eyepatch on the head. “I thought you wanted it for display?” He asked as he grabbed the hair and lifted it. “I had it sliced perfectly. Perfect cut.”

“Stop watching those clips of dogs greeting their owners after they come home from the military.” “But it’s so sweet!” “You have mascara dripping down your face.” “I didn’t wear any today.” She hikes an eyebrow. “Then it’s yesterday’s leftover mascara.” I grab a tissue from my desk drawer. “That’s likely.” I wipe my eyes and close the viral video. “Did you come in here just to yell at me?” “I wish I did.” She looks behind her, making sure no one is lingering by my door. “I heard Raul and Mike talking.”

Now, as the night fell, she checked the door and found a familiar package. Inside was a familiar black blindfold. But there was also an unmarked bottle of some kind of eyedrops. Elena's phone rang—Max. "I wanted to give you a new option," he explained. "The eyedrops will temporarily obscure your vision—you can still make out shapes and colors, just not any details. You don't have to use them though—that's why there's still the blindfold." Elena examined the bottle closer. It looked safe enough. "Let's try something new," Elena said. To her great surprise, she decided to use them—putting a drop in each eye.

While the others made camp, Eyepatch crouched down in front of me with that same rotten grin on his face. He studied me for a moment, tilting his head to one side, then the other. “I have to say,” he murmured, reaching up as if to touch my face, “that was hard to watch. Even for me.” I ground my teeth together and yanked my head away.

Epilogue I In the sprawling garden behind the big house by the sea, a war council was in session. It was being held beneath the dining room table. “Listen up,” said the eldest, and everyone listened up, because she was the leader and she had an eye patch, which made it official. The eye patch was made of construction paper and one of her mother’s hair elastics, and it kept sliding up onto her forehead, but she pushed it back down with the gravity of a true captain.

Elias stood beside the examination table. The shadowless lamp stretched his solitary shadow long across the wall. He watched her back. Her nape gland still exposed to the air. The faint brown ring of the old temporary bond mark glimmering under the cold white light. Then he reached to the tray. He picked up a fresh suppressant patch. He walked behind her. He pressed it over her gland with impossible lightness. This time, his fingers paused at the edge of the patch for a full second.
