Love, even. I have parts of family left, even if it mainly is a bit fucked up, nobodys life is 100% normal, perfect or without some bits that are fucked. And truth be told, my family is more than just a bit fucked up. It is indeed screwed up so bad that I would rather live with goats and sheep, but I guess this is just the way its meant to be, otherwise why are we on earth? Is it some type of punishment that we have to deal with? Live with? Live through? I really hope not. This time has to be different. It will be different

As far as family goes, they’re all I have… and Tyler doesn’t know anyone else. The thought hits me out of nowhere. They’re my family—but is Tyler part of it now, just because we’re married? Even though the marriage wasn’t planned and I’m only staying here for three months? What do I even call him that doesn't sound strange? He’s my husband… but is he a part of my family? This wasn’t supposed to be so complicated. When I reach my room, I unlock my phone. Several missed calls from my uncle and aunt. Two messages from Max. One from Vanessa. A few emails—definitely work-related—so I ignore them.

She just wanted the kids to feel they could talk to her openly. “We’re having a family day soon. I don’t have anyone to bring.” “Your dad and I will be there.” “But you’ll go with Lottie and Earl. I’m in sixth grade now.” She gently stroked his hair. “We’ll figure something out. We’re your family now.” “Even if we’re not blood-related?” “Yes!” Lottie chimed in, always eager to join the conversation. “Momma says family isn’t about blood, it’s about the heart! But my twin baby princess will come from Mommy’s tummy.”

“Yes. She’s his daughter after all.” Rio nodded. “Never change.” Eiji nodded again, rubbing his wife’s upper arm softly. “Nothing can change that. And… She’s in a better place now. She and her beloved husband. And father-in-law.” Rio smiled and nodded, leaning to her husband. “They are. And how I missed them so.” Family could never be broken. Even though one of us leave, that person will always be family. Especially if we are connected by blood. No matter how much one denies it and no matter how much one wants to reject, the blood is still one. It connects us all.

Quinn was astounded. Liesel bowed her head while stirring her coffee. The cold air in the room made Quinn's legs feel a little chilly. Noticing this, Liesel got up to adjust the thermostat. Connection that had been forged through shared experience rather than inherited duty. Belonging that had emerged from mutual affection rather than social convention. Love that had proven strong enough to risk life protecting, regardless of probable outcomes. But family could be lost. Family could be destroyed by forces that recognized no obligation to preserve what mattered to others. Family could be eliminated by enemies who understood exactly what such elimination would cost their opponents.
