I nod and look around. “Where is the book?” I ask. She wasn’t carrying anything when she entered the room. “I always carry it with me, you just can’t see it,” Shanna explains. She mutters a couple of strange words, holds out her hand, and a book appears and falls onto it. The cover is fine leather engraved with a vine-like design that swirls around the edges of a large picture. The picture depicts a woman standing with her arms stretched up above her head. Above her, there are stars in the sky and I swear I see one twinkle. Shanna opens to the first page and I am stunned to see a spell.

yes, I talk to myself on occasion. I turn the book in hand to find a small metal spike lashed to the back cover with fraying laces of claret suede. It must be silver, that would explain the slight burning sensation fading from my finger tips. Dark lines in the tarnished metal, look like they could have been engraved words at some point in the past. ‘I wonder what delights the other two hold?’ Caleb muses sarcastically. I eye the two remaining books, one remarkably slender, the other easily twice the breadth of either of its predecessors.

The air is thick with the musty scent of paper and knowledge, and the gentle hum of whispered conversations and rustling pages creates a soothing background noise. I took a cautious step inside, my shoes barely making a sound on the stone floor. The shelves stretched so high that I had to crane my neck to see the tops of them. The entire room was a sanctuary of knowledge, untouched by time, waiting to be explored. It was a place for the curious, for the seeker of stories, a treasure chest of forgotten words. My fingers itched to trace the spines of the books, to pull one from the shelf and lose myself in its pages.

It didn’t feel like mine to touch. And then—just as I was about to turn away—a spine caught the edge of my gaze. Not with color or glimmer, but with its silence. Turning the cover for me to see he said, “So this is your favorite book, huh?” Wondering what had him looking so sly I focused my eyes on the cover and I immediately felt a rush of heat flare through my body. Each of the books looked like they are all older than her judging by the smell and the worn pages inside, one page even literally crumbled to ashes in her hands, much to her horror, when she browsed through rather impatiently (she immediately stuffed it in the back of the shelf, half-praying to Hades that Athena will not notice the little blunder) but despite the books’ obvious age, they were all still well-preserved; free from dust and seemingly handled with care and love that only a lover of books could provide.
