“Make it a good one.” “Oh, I shall!” it chittered, and with a flourish, it conjured a new narrative pocket in our world. This one wasn't tiny. It was a full-scale, shimmering mirage that overlay a corner of the garden. It depicted a classic, sweeping fantasy epic—knights, dragons, a quest for a glowing mcguffin. But something was off. The knight kept tripping over his own cloak. The dragon was afraid of heights. The glowing mcguffin was just a very persuasive lightbulb.

She could only watch, transfixed, as he raised a hand and gestured around them. The library melted away, the shelves of books dissolving into the stone walls of a lavish chamber. A large, canopied bed dominated the space, piled with silks and furs, and the air was warm and scented with exotic oils. It was a scene straight from the most vivid of her fantasies.

Maya said suddenly, voice sharp with energy that hadn’t been weighed down by food. “Like?” Dante asked, tilting his head, his voice smooth, careless, but curious. “Twenty-one questions,” Maya announced proudly. “We take turns asking questions. You can pick anyone when it’s your turn.” His grin widened, something wicked sparking in his eyes. “And you can’t lie. You must answer. If you don’t, you drink a nasty concoction, vinegar, rotten eggs and spoiled milk.” Dante raised both brows, letting out a low whistle. “Jesus, Maya. You’re a terrible person.”

A girl about my age soared past the opening, actual wings of crystallized air carrying her across the sky. In the distance, I could see gardens where plants grew in impossible spirals, and a lake that reflected not the sky above but something that looked like liquid starlight. “This is like something out of a fantasy novel,” I breathed. “The best fantasies are based on truth.” Elena moved to stand beside me. “The question is: are you brave enough to step through?”
