THE LINE BETWEEN US
Just the faint sound of him breathing on the other end, steady but uneven, and the quiet hum of the night around me.
When he finally spoke again, his voice was smaller, fragile. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
“Tomorrow,” I echoed, clutching the phone like it was the only thing anchoring me to reality.
“Get some sleep, Autumn.”
“You too.”
“Goodnight.”
“Goodnight, Taylor.”
The line clicked off.
For several seconds, I just sat there in the dark, staring at my phone screen like it might light up again. But it didn’t. The silence that followed felt strange, empty but not hollow.
