The tail—a long, whip-like appendage tipped with a mono-molecular spike—slashed across the pod. SCREEEEEE. It carved a deep gouge in the golden hull, missing the window where my mother was sitting by inches. Then, the beast clamped its claws onto the pod. The extra weight lurched us sideways. The aerodynamic stability alarm started blaring inside the pod (I could hear the muffled panic). The wyvern climbed up the hull. It was crawling toward me. Its mechanical eyes were fixed on my arm. It could sense the energy. It wanted the battery.

The sound of its claws tearing through the ground is deafening—an echo of terror that shakes the foundations of everything we know. The creature finally emerges from the mist—and it’s far more terrifying than I imagined. Massive, covered in scales black as midnight. Its eyes burn with a crimson glow, like fire trapped within. Its face is a monstrous blend of reptile and nightmare, with fangs long enough to pierce stone. Its tail lashes across the ground with shocking speed, and its leathery wings stretch wide, stirring up a storm of dust and rubble. A wyrm. I never believed such a thing could truly exist.

Behind him, a creature follows. I command what’s left of my birds to stop it, but there aren’t enough. Every time they slam into a creature, a few die, and I don’t have enough time to call more from outside. But they do exactly what I need them to—they slow it down. And now I use my magic. Holding the feather close to my lips, I whisper into it as my eyes lock on the flying creature, “Viraen thornei.”

Its wings were tipped with silver, and its eyes were large and expressive, like twin sapphires. Another bird had feathers that looked like they were dipped in gold, with intricate patterns that sparkled as it moved. Its beak was long and curved, perfect for plucking the glowing pink toadstools that dotted the forest floor. Its eyes were a striking shade of violet, giving it an almost mystical appearance. Jester muttered darkly. Then above and to his left, he heard a screech. He turned to see the dragonfly-like Anomaly writhing in pain as flames consumed it. Above the falling monster was Fye in her full form, a silver-coated hell-horse, the feathery tips of her wings and the bottom of her hooves ablaze with dark green fire.
