Everyone paused, forks in midair, eyes turning my way. I met their stares, my expression serious. “Rouges.” “No way,” Fay blurted, eyes wide. “They crossed into pack territory. Not just sniffing around the border—they made it into the living area. Warriors chased them out, but they were fast and smart. We didn’t catch anyone.” I was still upset that I was at the opposite side of the pack at that moment. The table quieted. Even our dad leaned back, arms crossed. “But the real shitshow?” I added grimly. “They were in our backyard.”

Hazel's POV Alpha Matteo kept chuckling at how scared I looked. Forcing my eyes to open, my jaws suddenly dropped at the sight before me. The newly initiated warriors’ bodies were painted with what looked like red human blood. Their hair was decorated with wild bird feathers, cowries, and small bones, with bold white chalk marks under their eyes. I looked at the girls and noticed they were wearing small dresses made of dry leaves, soft animal skin, and ropes of grass, covering only their pubic areas.

Dodging he extended his wings as his smile turned into a frown. "You really are going to be defiant to the very end aren't you?" He asked snapping his fingers. The two dark warriors that had arrived with Rathial began to advance on Elaina. Moving she flipped over the first one and wrapped an arm around his throat. Growling she began squeezing. The warrior easily grabbed hold of her wrist and began to twist causing pain to shoot up Elaina's arm. Yelping she let go losing her balance just as the other warrior snuck up behind her knocking her out.

The distance was short—easy to jump. I leapt down and stood before her. She was small and pretty. "Your hair is red. I’ve never seen it before," she said. I found her funny and giggled. "You can touch it if you want." Her eyes sparkled with excitement as she gently tapped my hair, visibly amazed. "Betas are the warriors of a pack. They fight and protect everyone. They’re strong-willed. Don’t be sad that you’re a beta. You’re pretty, too," I said with a reassuring smile.

Not distractions. Standing up Hilda waved her hand and sparks flew out of it yellow in color rolling counter clockwise in a circle. “The portal is open, tell your men to come out and step through.” Rain mindlinked with his beta and out of the shadows on the wall wolves stepped forward all snarling making their way close to Rain. Rain made his way through the portal with his men by his side. Rain sighed and internally he thought, This is it, if he didn’t get this right there could be two wars his pack would be facing. No fucking pressure right?

She thought I'd hired her because I'd seen something useful in her, and that wasn't entirely untrue.
