Then my gaze fell on Cara.
She stood in the fading moonlight, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her skin streaked with blood that wasn’t hers. She held herself tall, shoulders squared, but I saw the tremor in her fingers, the faint shaking in her knees. And still she looked like fire. Still, she burned, even in the aftermath of war.
Kai snarled inside me, demanding I go to her, mark her, take her, claim what was ours. She fought beside us. She bled with us. She is ours.
