Seasons, they come and go, sometimes when we least expect or don’t want them to. After a couple of months of enjoying her relationship with Lewis, after countless dates, hanging out by the lake, sex in the shower and all the nasty stuff the end of a season was knocking. Lewis was starting to revert back to his earlier days slowly, step by step while frank, the demon that she was trying to cast out was still stalking her. She would close her eyes during yoga and open them only to see him. He even pretended to be a cleaner in the office just to see her. It was starting to get really serious and funny. It was no secret that he was obsessed with her.

Chapter Ten: The Sound of Splintering Glass The dream came on the third night after the Vault. Isabelle stood in a forest she did not know, beneath a sky that seethed with embered clouds. Trees stretched like blackened bones, their bark veined with red light. She could hear something behind her breathing , almost. The wind moved like ash through her hair. And then a voice, distant yet inside her: “He turned the key. You turned the flame. One must pay.”

Dorcus inquired softly, addressing McFarland yet again. Eliezer turned his eyes and his attentions towards her, her words breaking through his troubled thoughts and quiet considerations. The Forty-Eighth’s eyes widen. Because she finally understands. She doesn’t have four pieces. We have forty-three. And love, stories, and a valley that breathes with us? That’s the forty-fourth. The end begins now. Monday, March 13, 2028 – 6:11 a.m. The valley becomes a crucible. Steam turns to glass. Glass turns to lightning. Lightning turns to blood. The Forty-Eighth tries to run (she actually tries to dissolve back into the steam).

I can’t properly tell you how proud that made me feel. I’m not sure when the change happened. Probably around track three or four, maybe—either ‘Dim Carcosa’ or ‘Usurper’, I don’t recall for sure. My memory becomes fuzzy after Reggie’s smile. I remember the room around us vibrating, pulsing almost, as though the air itself was a curtain behind which a child was rapping their knuckles. The music grew distant, nowhere near as overpowering as it had been, a faint melody carried across the waves.

However, the blooms reopen and Summer III conclude with the monsters meeting the sprites. An interlude in the middle of the session reverts the forest back into a stage. The audience stretches, eats, goes to the bathroom, etc. As the curtains close, I rush toward the kids. My complete satisfaction causes the class to beam. Hard work drips down their skin from the pressure of the hot lights. But my words of affirmation let them know that the final puzzle piece is almost set. They then cheer when words of pizza escape my mouth. Once the interlude wraps up, I give everyone a cheer and hand them their red ribbons. These manifest in their blood, which will be important for later. They get back in

Ivy stood frozen at the intersection of fate, her breath shallow and ragged. On her left, a path of radiant light whispered peace, healing, and order. On her right, shadows twisted and churned, tempting her with power, vengeance, and unrestrained truth. The ground trembled beneath her as if the temple itself could not bear the weight of her decision. Behind her, Asher lay barely conscious, his blood staining the cracked floor. Elias stood farther back, confused and visibly struggling to piece together the chaos unfolding around him. Seraphina remained still, her expression unreadable, her violet eyes fixed on Ivy.

“You’ve been stalling.” The Herald’s broken face twitches. A wet, choking sound bubbles out of him, something between a laugh and a death rattle. For a moment, I think that he might be amused. Then the muscles in his face twitch, and he gasps in pain. “Tomorrow,” he continues, ignoring me, “the Final Game shall begin.” The torches flare violently, casting warped shadows that stretch and twist across the walls like clawed hands. “There is, however,” he adds, tilting his head at an unnatural angle, “a deviation.”
