Red and blue lights began flashing everywhere. Lila looked around in terror, covering her ears as the noise grew louder and louder, as though the entire den was about to explode. I recognized this alarm immediately. It only happened when there was a serious security breach. Alert. Unauthorized party detected. Tighten security. The automated speaker echoed through the den. Someone who wasn't supposed to be here had somehow gotten inside. Now they could prepare to meet their Creator. "Do not step out of this room no matter what," I ordered as I turned toward my Lila. She was staring at me with frightened, desperate eyes.

The cynical, bitter truth of it hung in the air between us, and I swallowed, looking away. “Well, I guess… you’re not wrong.” My voice sounded low, and I needed to sit to process the whole thing. I turned, walking toward a large, worn leather sofa across the room, and my knees hadn’t even begun to bend before the world erupted in a silent, visceral alarm. A piercing red light began strobing from a siren mounted high in the corner of the room without any sound, flaring that relentless, blood-pulse flash that painted the entire concrete space in strokes of emergency.

I couldn't be a hindrance. Anonymity didn't last long, though. For no reason, the lights in the upper corners began to flicker in an intense red, and an alarm, from whatever depth of hell it emerged, fired on our heads. We were denounced by the scandalous alert, and all my hope of escaping without greater physical damage had faded out like a candle after a whistle.

I pressed the call button but the sleek digital panel flashed red. Biometric Scan Required. Caleb had reprogrammed it. Without his thumbprint or a master override keycard, the doors wouldn't even open. I moved to the fire escape at the end of the long hallway. The heavy steel door was sealed tight. Above the handle, a small red light blinked steadily. It was armed. If I pushed that bar, alarms would blare throughout the building and Caleb’s private security. The men stationed in the lobby and the parking garage would be up here in under two minutes.

It's almost like pulling the day's weight over your head. I jump on my bed and flip the switch on the night lamp beside me,turning it off. "Good night Troy." I mumble to myself. * I wake up to the sound of deafening sirens blaring out of the security alarm systems. I snap my eyes open and pull the covers away from my body. The security bulb in my room is blinking a red light,corresponding with the sounds disturbing the entire building. It's going to be blinking that same way in every other room as well.

BEEP! The emergency fire alarms blared from the ceiling, accompanied by flashing red lights that painted the store in blood-colored shadows. The overhead sprinklers burst to life, raining cold water down on the screaming crowd. A violent explosion rocked the building from the floor below. The ground beneath my feet violently shuddered, sending a shockwave that shattered every display window in the boutique. Shards of glass rained down like ice, and dark smoke billowed up through the windows, choking the air with the smell of burning chemical heat.

I probe the ceiling until my eyes stop on the white casing of the smoke detector mounted above the bed. Right there, embedded in the plastic, a tiny red dot is blinking steadily on and off. I curse savagely under my breath. I’ve been recorded.

They’re standing on the furniture, pouring drinks onto the crowd below, flashing guns tucked into their waistbands like fashion accessories. In the center booth, I see my targets. The lieutenants. "Clear the floor," I say into my comms. Enzo nods to the team. One of my men pulls the fire alarm. The lights don't come on immediately, but the strobes stop, replaced by the harsh, flashing white emergency strobes. The music cuts out, replaced by a shrill, piercing siren. Confusion ripples through the crowd. Then panic. "Fire!" someone screams.

The alarm went from solid red to a blinking red. On the third blink, a special alarm went off in the security room and the door locked behind the interloper. Down in the hotel’s security room everyone saw this and three men scrambled. One got on the phone while the other two sat at monitors searching for the breach. One of the men located the blinking red light and when he announced where it was located, all three men gasped. A moment later, Yuri walked through the door, followed closely by yet another man.

My feet slammed against the steps, pain lancing up my bones so sharply that my whole body spasmed. Something bright caught my eye when they towed me past the first landing. I focused and saw a red fire alarm box mounted on the wall. It was just a small red square with bold white letters beside it reading 'Fire Alarm,' but that was all I needed. So, I summoned the last dregs of my strength and twisted my torso violently as they dragged me past it. I lifted my foot and slammed my bare sole hard against the red box. The alarm was triggered with a crisp snap. To my relief, a piercing, deafening siren erupted throughout the entire building the next second.
