I was thankful for the buzz that came on as it helped distract me from how awkward I felt in Luke’s presence. The late-August full moon was glowing above the lake, making the water sparkle. At least a hundred werewolves from our pack had come to say goodbye to Luke and a few of his fellow warriors who would be leaving on a mission the next day. It was a mix of older high schoolers, such as Lucy and me, and young warriors who trained and patrolled with Luke and his friends. Our pack was a community of about forty-five hundred werewolves located deep in the woods of northern Vermont, where humans didn’t normally venture, a heavily forested area surrounded by mountains.

There was a fire place which they made in order to keep themselves warm. All of them where seen gathered around the fire like it was a committee of witches having their meeting, planning on a mission to devour. Each of them was putting on thick article of clothing to help the body warm faster. The cold was much like it was winter. It’s a known phenomenon that areas surrounded by water are most often cool especially the cool breeze that makes one thing that he or she was about to freeze. That’s because, during the day, the sun heats hard on the ground producing heat that helps warm the rivers, then at night, the river produced immense cool breeze that helps to keep the ground cold. Normally this would indicate that your mate was present but we knew that Fiona was safe and sound with my sister and Felicity was at her dressing fitting according to her father. The dark permeates the air, fermenting into something tangible, something horrifying, and I breathe it in. Everything is burning. I fumble around, searching through the blankets and flinging everything I touch away from me until I finally see my phone. Kieran comes up as a suggested number, and I click it straight away, my breaths still shuddering painfully out of me.
