DAMON'S POV Year 1900 - 19th Century "Father has arrived!" Adam shouted, his voice full of excitement as he bolted outside. My heart leaped at his words. I dropped the book I had been engrossed in, its leather cover hitting the wooden floor with a dull thud, and rushed after him. It had been a full year since Father had left for the war in Russia. They called it the Boxer Rebellion, and Father had joined the Russian forces aiding in suppressing the uprising in China. His absence had left a void in our lives, and Mother, especially, had seemed almost lifeless, her once-vivid grey eyes dulled by fear and worry.

My brother had little respect for women being in charge, yet he better get used to it. “What else does it say?” I ask Kayla, trying to break the tension growing between them “That she will come up against others in a similar position. Look I don’t know if its true as this book was written long ago but it just seems weird that it talks of triplets and you are triplets and she is the eldest......” she trails off Alexander holds a hand up to her silencing her, he stands up and shakes his head “So you are telling me the girl I am in love with is going……..”

The hallway was bright, filled with daylight that had never reached this far inside the palace before. “Well, here goes nothing.” I smiled as I squeezed past my creation and turned the doorknob. The room beyond was empty aside from one book, encased in glass. Whispering surrounded it, urging me to reach out and take the book. The voices grew louder, drowning out everything else. I was so entranced I hadn’t heard the movement behind me until a hand grasped my shoulder.

The world seemed to have shrunk, and I shrunk in with it, unable to break free. But hiding has limits. I can't hide for the rest of my life even if I wanted to. The book festival was coming up fast, and as president of the book club, everything was on my shoulders. I couldn’t dodge the responsibility, no matter how badly I wanted to. And unfortunately, the first step of planning was for me to meet the school director. Kael’s mother.

"I don't believe anyone has ever requested that book before. I will search for it immediately, my lady!" Amani trailed behind the boy as he aimlessly wandered through the aisles. Every now and then, she caught a glimpse of him looking up at her nervously.
