After they loaded up, the bus zoomed through underground tunnels.
The road rose to the Surface and the bright sunshine reflected off the pavement, blinding Tom. He'd only heard of the Surface but never seen it with his own eyes. Not that he could see it now, but after a few moments and some squinting, the broken pavement came back into view. He watched the desert roll past, littered with dark towers. On his left, the ocean rolled out as a glittering carpet. Further, in the distance, flat panels protruded from the sea, soaking up sunlight to power the vast cities below.
