Chapter 1

Kaia's POV

I remained by Alpha King Raul Wolfgrim's side for five whole years. He was ruthless on the battlefield, but everyone in the pack knew just how much he doted on me.

He was the kind of werewolf who would pull me into his lap and just hold me while the pack elders were arguing during pack meetings.

He would also bury his face in my neck, whispering words that only I could hear, making me blush and my heart race.

"Your scent drives me absolutely crazy…

"You belong to me…

"You're all mine."

Five years of extreme pampering from him was more than enough to make me a fool in love. And I was foolish enough to believe that this would continue forever.

However, yesterday, Raul returned from the borderlands with another she-wolf by his side, Eva Grayback.

Less than 24 hours later, she was wearing the Moonstone necklace that Raul's grandmother had left to him. And just 48 hours later, the pack began betting how long it would be before Raul forced me to hand over the Luna Queen's Crown.

Apparently, Raul and Eva had grown up together, but they lost contact during the war. Years later, Raul found me, barely hanging on to a thread in the snow in the woods. The moment he caught my scent, he firmly believed that the Moon Goddess had finally brought back his long-lost fated mate to him.

The only problem was that I couldn't remember a thing about my past.

I couldn't recall my family or my pack. I had lost all my memories from before I joined the Bloodmoon pack.

So I stayed by Raul's side, letting him love and pamper me however he wanted, as if I were his oxygen.

Now, his real fated mate was back. And I had already planned to leave before Raul told me to.

However, I didn't think that Eva would approach me first.

With no one else watching her, she dropped her shivering, pitiful act and gave me a blatant once-over, sizing me up.

"So, you're Kaia Raedwulf," she said. "I heard that you've been lying in my fated mate's arms for five years because of how similar your scent was to mine. Don't you think that you're a little too shameless for doing that?"

Her words hurt me more than I thought they would. The reason was that I'd actually asked myself the very same question before, but I never knew the answer.

She stepped closer, a wide smile on her face, then tore open my collar. The marks marks Raul had left on my neck and chest were still there, not yet faded, now fully exposed.

A horrible look of jealousy immediately appeared in her eyes.

"Stop thinking of yourself as the Luna Queen," she warned me dangerously in a loud growl. "You were nothing but a temporary stand-in. You're just an impostor who got lucky because Raul made a mistake."

I suppressed the pain surging in my chest. I didn't know whether what she said was true, but I had never once intended to steal the title from anyone.

I straightened my back and turned to the door.

"I get it," I replied quietly. "I've been meaning to talk to Raul—"

However, I was suddenly yanked back forcefully by my hair, and my head was then slammed hard against the back of the door. I immediately began to see stars.

Eva's face then appeared right before my eyes, her once pitiful eyes now glowing darkly and dangerously as she glowered at me.

"What? Going to tell tales to Raul now? Did you really think that he'd still take your side just because you'd been whoring yourself to him for the last five years?"

She dug her claws into my chin. It hurt so bad that I frowned.

"I want him to hurt you. I want him to resent you. I want him to humiliate you in front of the entire pack. I want you to watch him choose me while you can only fall to your knees and beg…"

The next second, she grabbed my hand and slapped herself in the face with it. The entire room reverberated with the sound of the slap.

My irises narrowed in shock as I stumbled back. "You're crazy."

She hissed in pain. However, the look in her eyes just glowed even more menacingly.

"I've been rehearsing this countless times ever since I was on my way here. I've also contacted Raul via mind-link. Wanna guess if he's going to take your side or mine?"

Before I could react, the door was harshly thrown open, throwing me off balance and crashing into the wall.

I hissed and grabbed my aching shoulder as Raul sauntered into the room. He walked right past me and went straight to Eva, helping her up from the ground.

"Alpha King… I just wanted to befriend Kaia… I don't know what I said to make her attack me all of a sudden…"

Her eyes filled with tears as they began streaming down her cheeks. The very hand she'd used to dig her claws into me earlier was now trembling against Raul's chest.

"She yelled at me for ruining her life… She said she was going to make me disappear from the pack…"

I froze to the floor, feeling a cold, icy gaze on me.

"Kaia Raedwulf."

This was the first time Raul had ever called me by my full name instead of "dear", "darling", "honey", or "my mate".

Instead, he said it coldly and without emotion.

"Apologize," he ordered.

I opened my mouth, about to tell him that she was lying.

I wanted to tell him that I'd planned on leaving anyway.

I wanted to ask him how he could still look at me as though I was just a mere stranger after everything we'd been through together for the past five years.

However, all the words died in my throat, and it eventually, dissolved into a barely audible sob.

"I won't."

I didn't wait for Raul to reply and continued heading north. I could hear stumbling footsteps behind me and knew it was him. He didn't say another word, simply following me in silence from behind. It took me three whole days to cross Frostback Mountain. The mountain path was steep, the snow was knee-deep and slippery, and every step required immense effort.Raul stayed about ten steps behind me, trying to help me several times, but I deterred him with my stern gaze every time. So, he approached it differently. If I slipped, he would quietly stomp a crater into the snow that was more stable and grippy. If I couldn't climb over a rock, he would go around to the top and tie ropes to tree trunks, letting them hang down onto my path. When I spent the nights in caves, he would sit at the cave entrance with his back to me, letting the wind and snow beat down on him.I didn't thank him, but I didn't refuse his help either. This was what he owed me, after all.On the morning of the fou

The woods were a lot quieter than I expected.Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows and rays of light on the ground. I walked among the tall spruce and fir trees, my feet crunching on the soft fallen leaves on the ground. The pup in my belly seemed to sense my excitement, too, and gave me a gentle kick. I couldn't help but chuckle at that. However, the smile didn't last long on my face before I was suddenly interrupted by a very familiar scent, the smell of pine needles mixed with the cold of the wind.It was Raul.My feet froze on the spot.A werewolf in a black cloak stood in the clearing ahead with his back to me. He looked much thinner than a month ago, his shoulders slightly hunched as though he were carrying an invisible weight. His hair was disheveled, and it was obvious that he hadn't taken meticulous care of it as he used to.He seemed to sense my eyes on him and slowly turned around. The moment our eyes met, I felt my breath catch in my throat.

Kaia's POVI ended up staying in the cave for a whole month. The old woman in the cave, who later introduced herself as Rowena Sable, was a priestess who told me that the holy blood within me had been dormant for far too long and could not be awakened in the usual way.I had to first soak my entire body in a medicinal bath made from moontwine root, silvergrass, and moonstone powder to recuperate before my powers could be awakened.Every morning, I would soak in that steaming hot spring, and Rowena would add various herbs to the water until the water turned a clear green color. At first, soaking in the medicinal bath was very painful for me. The medicinal properties seeped into my body through my pores, feeling like countless needles coursing through my blood vessels and prickling me everywhere. My limbs would twitch uncomfortably, my heart would pound as if it were about to explode, and the veins on my forehead would protrude. Sometimes, the pain was so great that I'd even faint.

He recalled how Kaia had been brewing the concoction in the kitchen the other day and accidentally scalded and blistered herself in the meantime, her eyes turning red from the pain. Yet, she still rushed up to him as soon as she saw him to hand the medicinal concoction to him first. What had he said back then? He'd called her cruel and vicious, and smashed the antidote. He'd thoroughly humiliated her in front of Eva.But had he actually investigated the so-called contaminated wolfsbane afterward? He hadn't. He'd simply believed Eva who told him that Kaia was the one behind everything. He'd also believed it when the elders told him that Kaia had done it. He never even gave her a chance to properly defend herself. If Kaia had truly been the one behind the wolfsbane incident, then why would she have resorted to such a clumsy, poorly-planned way to execute it? She'd been living in the pack for five years and taking care of pack matters for the last four years. Everyone in the pack bor

Third-Person POVThe iron gates leading into the North Prison were kicked open, and the two guards at the gate were so frightened that they immediately fell to their knees on the ground.Raul stood at the entrance, his black cloak fluttering in the night wind. His eyes were red and bloodshot, which would only happen if the Alpha King's fury had reached its peak."Where is she?""K-Kaia?" the captain of the guard, Xander Talbot, answered, trembling like a leaf. "Alpha King… Kaia… Kaia had a very high fever last night, and the healer said she needed moontwine for recovery… So she brought Kaia out to the back to get them…""And then?" Raul pressed, his suppression weighing down even more heavily on them. "I told you to keep an eye on her. Is this how you do it?"Xander's face turned a bright crimson, but he didn't dare to struggle or fight back."Just tell me where she is right now," Raul said, enunciating each word."In… In the back…of the hill…next to the cliff…"Raul then rele

The fall was far longer than I had imagined. The wind howled in my ears, and the moonlight on the cliff shattered into countless silvery-white specks before my eyes.I instinctively reached out to grab the vines growing on the surface of the cliffs, but my palms ended up being cut open by the sharp rocks, leaving a long trail of blood on the surface instead.A sharp, piercing pain shot through my abdomen at that moment. The faint life force within me trembled violently, as though pleading for help.I used all of my strength to turn toward the cliff, and I suddenly slammed my right foot against a protruding rock. A sharp pain immediately shot through my ankle, and I heard the bone-chilling sound of bones fracturing. However, at the very least, my descent slowed for just a moment.Just then, I crashed into an old pine tree growing out from a crevice in the rock. Angry pine branches lashed out at me, the rough bark tearing through most of my skin.I clung tightly to the tree trunk a
