One Friday in late March I came home from work to find Colleen and the girls loading sleeping bags and duffel bags into the trunk of Colleen's car. "What's going on? Is someone running away from home?" "No Uncle Bobby, we're going to our Gymboree. Come with Mommy to take us, please, please, please." The girls had been talking about this for weeks. The Camp Fire Girls had a weekend campout that was going to take place in the gym of the local high school. The campout would last from Friday evening until 10 AM Sunday morning. ​The days passed quickly, and the long-awaited school camping trip finally arrived. The students were brimming with excitement, preparing for their adventure in the woods. At school, everyone gathered to board the bus that would take them to the campsite, their backpacks stuffed with supplies and smiles anticipating the thrills ahead. ​Amidst the crowd, Alex watched Scarlett, attentive to her every move. He knew he couldn't let anything happen to her; something deep inside compelled him to stay close, especially during this excursion.

I thought she was coming from one of the houses in the back, but maybe she’s been running farther than I thought. I put my hand on her forehead, call my magic forward and gently call forth her reason memories; A camp. Adults talking, training, laughing. Children running amongst the adults playing. Campfires and tents. A feeling of belonging and safety. People working together herding animals morning and evening; cows and goats. Pigs, hens and geese walking loose in the camp. Suddenly wolves attack. Big wolves with pure red eyes. Bigger than any ordinary wolf. Foam at their mouth, blood in their fur. Screams and cries in the night.

Scarlett nodded, rising from her seat and following her mother to the center of the camp, where a large tree stood, waiting to be adorned with garlands and lanterns. As they worked, Scarlett could feel the excitement and anticipation rising up all around her. Children giggled and ran through the camp, playing games and chasing each other. Music filled the air, as one of the clan's musicians played a jaunty tune on his flute. "Are you excited for tonight's feast?" Scarlett's older brother, Ethan Leighton, asked, grinning broadly.

“I don’t want to be special. I just want to be fast.” I smiled at the memory as the camp gates came into view. The wolf clan summer camp was tucked deep into the forest, far from ordinary roads, protected by both guards and old rules. It was meant to be safe, a place where children of the Pack could learn discipline, teamwork, and control. I parked and stepped out of the car, the gravel crunching under my shoes. The air smelled of pine and earth, familiar and grounding. For a brief moment, I allowed myself to believe that this was just another normal day.

But boredom has finally won out over whatever deeply-rooted awkwardness I have about him, and now’s the time. The camp itself is actually in a brilliant location—deep near the edge of the Winterfall border, close to Canada. Canadian packs have remained neutral, so if things go south, we can make a quick escape. And aside from the brutal cold, the camp is surprisingly well-equipped. There’s a lake nearby, perfect for hunting, fishing, and bathing. Caroline keeps calling this a vacation, which only proves that she is unwell.
