Freya landed face-first in a massive, deep puddle of brown mud left over from yesterday's rain storm. Dark, foul-smelling sludge exploded outward, splashing all over her white crop top and bare legs. Her arms flailed wildly in the muck as she tried to push herself up. Her hands slipped, and she face-planted right back into the dirt with a second, wetter squelch. For three seconds, the yard was dead silent. Then, I broke. "Pfft." A loud, genuine bark of laughter ripped from my throat. I clutched my stomach, doubling over as tears pricked the corners of my eyes. I couldn't stop. It was the funniest, most satisfying thing I had seen in my entire life.

Then—suddenly, joyously—she laughed. The sound was small and bubbling, but unmistakable. Aria froze. Kael did, too. “Did she—” he began. “Laugh?” Aria finished. “At you? Her laugh wasn't loud and annoying like any other person. Her laugh sounded like music. Pure. Harmonious. I wasn't being cliche'. It was exactly like that. To my ears at least.
