They had the child, for now. They had a marriage license. They had a moment’s respite.
But I had the deeper resources. I had patience. And I had just been personally, profoundly insulted.
The sun was fully up now, bathing the room in a light that felt too bright, too revealing. I did not flinch from it. Let them have their morning of victory. Let them cling to each other and their fragile, paper-thin safety.
Love was a flame. It needed oxygen, fuel, a hearth to burn in. I was about to cut off the oxygen, seize the fuel, and demolish the hearth.
