"Come on, Joey. Zayla's just curious about the animals. She's pregnant, so be more patient with her. Besides, most of the animals are gentle. It's not like she'll go near the dangerous ones." Even though I had refused, he secretly took the keys and gave them to her. What he didn't know was that this betrayal had cost me everything. The starving bears, having devoured my severed hand, charged after me. I had no choice but to scramble up the iron netting and scream for help. But Zayla hadn't gone far. She stood nearby, laughing, and threw rocks at me as if I were a monkey. Stone after stone struck my body. "Die, you filthy woman! Your son would never claim a wretch like you as his mother!"

Seeing it lifted the gloom from me. Jonathan bought it, saying pets heal the heart; when I felt down, I should hold it and let it warm me. Of course, if it warmed me, I must care for it properly—plump it up, keep its fur glossy. So I bought cat food, a bed, cans of pâté—an entire haul. On the way home, the sky opened. A gray stray cowered under an awning, soaking wet. The shopkeeper kicked it away, and the cat slunk out into the downpour to seek shelter. It was so loud that it reached Zev who was then chasing someone in the woods.

Victory's glow in Chapter 25 sealed with a final love scene under stars, Alya and Kael's bodies entwining, tattoos blazing, passion a testament to growth. Veyra’s escape in Chapter 26 left a curse, her red eyes vowing revenge, while Soren's prophecy shadowed the dawn: "A greater darkness rises—the eternal crescent calls new blood." It hooked for Book 2, Alya's growth sealed, the pack united but forever changed.
