He slid his name badge off, set it on the marble like a spent casing, and loosened the pink tie by exactly one millimetre.
“Sir,” the clerk blurted, panic pinging at the edges, “but we’re short-staffed and—”
“You’ll be fine,” Frank said, already walking. “Remember: smile with your mouth, not your eyes. Predators can tell.”
He didn’t wait for the reply.
Back in the Moon Bar, the table had found a quieter gear—equal parts respect and mischief. Jack watched him approach, and for a moment they were younger, dust-scorched, sweating under a sun that belonged to no one.
