Maya had nearly fallen asleep. Then the door burst open. The smell entered first. Alcohol. Heavy and sharp. Freya froze. For a brief second, Maya saw fear flashed across her mother's face. "Hide," Freya whispered. Her voice shook. "Now." Before Maya could ask why, Freya pulled her from the bed and shoved her inside a wardrobe. The door closed. Darkness swallowed everything. Only a narrow gap remained between the doors. Enough to see. Enough to hear. Enough to remember.

Anton asked. “I am the wizard of oz; don’t you know you have come to the land of oz?” Freya said. “That’s a movie, not real,” Anton said with a frown. “It is too real. For I am the wizard. I should know,” Freya said. “Mommy, is someone behind the curtain?” Anton asked. “NO. There is no one behind the curtain,” Freya said again. “Mommy, can you open the curtain?” Anton requested.

When the waiters brought out buckets of instant noodles, the entire room fell silent. Every guest froze. Then, the whispers started. Their expressions turned strange, eyes full of disdain. My mother-in-law, Nancy Tucker, looked like she had just swallowed poison. As for me, I acted like nothing was wrong. I picked up the microphone and cheerfully waved to everyone to start eating. "What are you all waiting for? Go on, eat. Don't tell me none of these flavors suit your taste," I said.

The ancient library was a tomb of forgotten knowledge, its towering shelves heavy with dust and the faint metallic tang of old paper. Freya had always preferred the night shift. The quiet wrapped around her like a lover’s cloak, letting the shy 24-year-old lose herself in books rather than people. Her pale skin glowed under the dim lamps, dark curls framing wide green eyes that hid a secret restlessness--a hunger she didn’t yet understand. But only 'Yet' Tonight, the storm outside howled against the tall windows. Lightning flashed as she carried a stack of restricted occult volumes toward the back. A presence filled the air, cold and ancient, making the hairs on her neck rise.

Maya's Pov I sat on my bed at eight forty-five, car keys in my hand, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My heart pounded so hard I could hear it. In fifteen minutes, I was supposed to meet Derek at the construction site. Alone. Away from the house. Away from Sophie. My phone buzzed. Sophie. "Movie night! We're watching Home Alone. Get down here!" My stomach dropped. How was I supposed to sneak out during movie night?

“I can come back later, sir.” “We’re done, Haynes,” Freck stops him. “Come.” Haynes turns to face Freck again, his eyes shifting nervously as they lock at the ‘couple’. “It’s really bad, sir,” he starts. “The child is hectic. She has this glow around her body, and her eyes are totally white. I don’t know what sort of witch she is.” Freck looks around the floor. There’s no way he’s laying Heaven back there after what she just passed through.

she chipped out as he grabbed me to her chest and kissed me. “Drop the packages, thanks,” Freya yelled at the servant who dropped the package and left. As soon as the door was shut she turned to look at me with this evil smirk on her face and I knew whatever she had in mind wasn't good or would be wild and crazy. “Drop the bomb, I could take it,” I grin ready for whatever she has to say. “So I got a ticket to one of the most concealed Masquerade parties in New York, you wouldn't believe the pains I went through to get these tickets,” she breathed out and my eyes widened.

Amelia said cheering me up. “On a scale of one to ten, how bad is it going to be?” I asks. “Well, we’ve never experienced it before but from what Caden’s mom said, it is the scariest rule ever. A lot of ladies eyeing Caden gets a chance to fight you for your position and it is a fight to death” She said making me sigh. “What are you guys up to?” Keith said as he and Caden walks in. “We are just leaving” I said as I drag Caden out of the room towards his office.
