He looked exhausted.
From outside, came the sound of sirens.
I froze.
Jason glanced up, his chest heaving. “You hear that?”
Hayden nodded, eyes locked on Jared. “Yeah.”
“They’re coming.”
Jared’s wild laughter filled the cabin again. “Oh, that’s perfect,” he said, voice breaking. “You called the cops? You think they’ll save you?”
Hayden’s tone was cold. “They’ll save you from yourself.”
Jared’s expression twisted, anger flashing like a storm. And then, in one violent jerk, he threw his weight back, slamming his elbow into Jason’s ribs. Jason grunted in pain and lost his grip just long enough for Jared to slip free.
