He thought about the woman in the southeast corner who had been first and had read for an hour and a half. He opened the library notes. He wrote: The fifth of August. The first day. Two hundred and fourteen people. Forty-one pauses on the fourth tread — nineteen percent. Sixty-three in the reading room. Twelve for longer than an hour. The woman in the southeast corner: an hour and a half. She arrived first and she stayed the longest. She did not know she was first. She came because it was Tuesday and the library was open and she had a reason or no particular reason — either is the right reason.

All the other women said in unison. "What makes us so pissed off is that so many black and African women are always seen and stereotyped as sexual beasts. That our only assets in life is have sex and give pleasure to men. Even though sex is good, black women shouldn't live life only pleasing or obeying to men. We have our own lives to live and we don't need validation from any man. We could be sexy, beautiful, confident, and strong all by ourselves. We don't need to please a man like you to know our worth. The largest out of the men said before they walked us to the back. The first thing i heard was excited giggles from children and teenagers grinning about the new girlfriend book. Zach says as we begin walking to the library again. We walk in, waving at the woman who is standing guard at the front window like someone might decide to steal some books. Since Piper and Zach seem to know where they’re going, we follow them back to a secluded corner of the library. It’s darker back here but there’s a table set up and a young woman is there with a computer in front of her, typing away at lightening speed.
