The asphalt lifted up like a black ocean. Julian's body became solid again. He stumbled forward, catching the edge of the desk as the platform beneath them started to tilt. Julian yelled "Elara! The book is closing! The core is dumping everything into the world! We're falling back to the city!" The office chair slipped from under Elara as she slid down the wet desk. The laptop and keyboard slid past her plunging into a vortex of black water that had opened where the highway used to be. Elara did not let go of the journal. She held it to her chest as she fell backward into the dark, freezing void.

Then we’re falling. Alex yanks me against him as the emergency lights flicker on, casting everything in a sickly red glow. His heart pounds against my cheek, his arms forming a protective cage around me. Eliana stumbles, catching herself against the wall. Marcus’s papers scatter across the floor like autumn leaves, revealing glimpses of damning evidence in their descent. “The emergency brakes should engage automatically,” Alex starts, his voice steady despite our plunge. “The system was just inspected last—” Another shriek of metal cuts him off. We drop faster, the floor numbers blurring past: 15, 14, 13… The force pushes us up slightly, creating a sickening sensation of weightlessness.

Have a happy Halloween 🎃 Javonte We plunged into the abyss, and my thoughts scrambled to piece together how this could be happening. The weightlessness in this fall felt endless, but in reality, it only lasted seconds. The moment my body slammed into the cold, unforgiving stone below, the air was forced from my lungs, leaving me gasping in the darkness.

Not chaotic, but certain. I was falling, slowly, unexpectedly, and beautifully. And for the first time in a long time, I didn’t want to stop.

What is he, then? She thought about the bench. The river. The way he'd said you're the first person who came back. I don't know yet. That's what you always say. Because it's always true. What are you going to do about it? She set the phone down. The room was quiet. She stood up. Walked to the shelf. Pulled out his book. The Falling. She opened it to the first page. He knew he was going to fall before he hit the ground.

Still nothing. Panic set in as I frantically searched for a key or a way to break down the door. The flames seemed to be closing in, the smoke growing thicker. I stumbled backward, desperate for a solution. And then, the floor gave way beneath me. I felt a rush of weightlessness, a scream tearing from my throat as I plummeted down a hidden hole. The flames, the smoke, everything disappeared in an instant. I was falling again.* ****

Her body locked— And the force sent her flying backward. Her foot missed solid ground. Her body tilted— And then— She fell. Her scream tore through the air as she dropped from the mountain, echoing against the cliffs below. Then, Silence. I exhaled slowly. Walked to the edge. Looked down. Dust rose faintly from below. No movement at first. Then, I jumped. The fall didn’t touch me. The energy caught me halfway, slowing my descent until I landed lightly against the rocky ground below.

Air between us feels thick, though he acts like nothing's there at all. Fingers press against the balcony's stone rail, chilled by morning air. Below, earth tilts distant - too far to touch. A soft touch rides the space below my neck. It settles there without weight. Falling is what happens. No shout escapes. Resistance never shows up. A sudden gust lifts my dress, tangles strands of hair across my face. Above me, clouds blur into blue while the railing shrinks below. There goes Noah - walking away without a word. I fall.

He stretched onto his toes, trying to slide the heavy book into place. "It's just a little..." Further. His fingertips barely reached the shelf. "I almost—" The ladder shifted. Lucas's eyes widened. "Oh!" His foot slipped. Everything happened in an instant. The ladder tilted sideways. The thick book slid from his hands. Before he could hit the floor, a strong arm wrapped firmly around his waist. Another hand caught his wrist. The falling book landed with a loud thud. Silence filled the aisle. Lucas blinked. He wasn't falling anymore.

They were rising, his two feet, like two kites on his thin, wiry legs, slowly rising out in front of him and above my head. There was my abdomen, splayed out ahead of me. I was unable to make out the edges of my waist because of the fluttering of my t-shirt in the wind as I fell. The realisation had dawned. I could feel nothing under me. Even the air was nowhere. My hands were flapping by my side—two noodles I had no control of. My chest tightened, my breath speeding up. I managed to force my eyes shut, bracing for impact. I was powerless versus gravity; I was falling.
