**The Descent**
We fall.
Not into darkness-into *memory*.
The void peels back, revealing a forest of towering mushrooms, their caps glowing with bioluminescent veins. The air is thick with spores that taste of iron and regret. Eden coughs, his shadowy pool spreading like ink in water. "Where...?"
"Not where," I say. "*When*."
The mushrooms part. A village emerges, huts built from sinew and bone. Figures move-humanoid, but their skin is bark, their eyes hollow pits filled with fireflies. They hum as they work, butchering a creature that is all teeth and too many eyes.
