She says hugging into me, i take the card from her hands and i open the door then hand it back to her, when i know she's protected I engulf my body in flames and I swing open the door, lines and lines of salt sat across my path, dark mountains ash was glued to the floor. I have not fully recovered.” “Which means you still want her blood?” “Aye.” “Ha,” Asher scoffed. “Like hell I will let that happen. Listen, if you leave these woods, you would come upon human settlement, you can have as much blood as you want there.”

It was a message. Asher looked at me with the look of bewilderment, he walked towards the dead body and cut the veins. She dropped with a thud and my worst fear come true. I reached for him— “Elira.” Ash’s voice stopped me mid-step. I turned slightly. He had entered the chamber without me noticing, his dark eyes already scanning the room as more wounded soldiers pushed through the doors behind him. The steady flow of demons had not slowed. If anything, it was getting worse. Ash watched the missing arm for a moment before his gaze returned to me. “No,” he said calmly. I blinked at him. “He’s losing too much blood,” I replied. “And he will likely continue to lose it.”

I was on my feet and moving before I’d fully decided to, past the detectives, past Renata’s cool, unreadable stare following me down the hall, out into the cold harbor air, and it wasn’t until I was three streets from Dockside Row that I let myself feel the full shaking terror of everything that had happened in that study, everything that was still happening, somewhere out there, to a man bleeding in the back of an ambulance because he’d chosen, without a second’s hesitation, to put his body between me and a bullet meant for both of us. But instead of speaking, he shook his head and pointed toward the top of the book. I followed his finger. Towering shelves surrounded us, filled with spellbooks, prophecy scrolls, bloodline registries, and pages that hadn’t seen light in years. Ashley and I split up, combing through the chaos. We didn’t talk much. Just worked. Quiet and focused, like we used to study for exams late at night, sharing flashcards and stolen snacks. Then she called out softly. “I think I found something.” She held out a leather-bound tome, branded with a silver moon crest. My fingers trembled as I took it. I try again to mind link him with no answer. I hear footsteps down the hall coming towards my door.
