When he does, I release a heavy breath, placing a hand on my beating heart and replaying each moment.

My nails left crescent moons in the silk—another constellation of things I couldn’t fix. They said pawns were disposables. Move ‘em forward, sacrifice ‘em fast, forget ‘em even sooner. But pawns, they forget to mention, have only one job: to get to the other side and become something else. Queens. The kind of piece that doesn’t wait to be protected—it cuts sideways, backward, and through the bones of lazy kings.

Over time, Morrigan noticed that he started clapping for her when she won during their tournaments. Morrigan found a friend in Kaya, the warrior she had beaten on the first day of training, born out of their desire to improve. This story was written in different character's perspective and her back story before His Fragile Flame. You don't have to read the first book to understand this novel, and I think it's better if you read this before that because HFF has spoilers.

I will be spending the next month going back through and editing my chapters, something I didn't have as much time as I would have liked while writing with a deadline these past few months, and then I will start on book 2.
