Coming Out of the Deep
He nearly slipped twice before finally getting himself upright in the saddle, his posture stiff and uncertain.
“Is she supposed to move this much?” he asked, clutching the reins like his life depended on it.
“She’s barely breathing,” I laughed. “Relax. Just follow my lead.”
We started slowly, letting the horses take us through the open fields. The ranch stretched far, with fenced pastures on one end and long rows of fruit trees on the other. The trees were heavy with ripe, sun-kissed fruits, peaches, nectarines, plums, and more, and the scent alone was enough to make my mouth water.
