Mentions, messages, tags. My stomach tightened as I opened one. It was a meme caricature of my old picture. There was a poop emoji on top of my head, my brown eyes were replaced with a red laser, and a boldly written text on the picture said ‘SLUT’. I groaned and locked my phone immediately. But it was too late. I’d already seen it. Another buzz. Then another. Curiosity got the better of me again. I saw a particular message from a private page in my DM.

My skin crawled in desperation for him. The first week I started sending him memes during the day, but he didn’t really understand them, much like the emojis, and it took him a moment to pick up. I had a feeling his office may have been a little too stuffy, and memes weren’t a part of his everyday life like they were with mine. Jenna sent me a dozen a day. Some edited his face and made a meme about it! They were hilarious as hell! I was busy scrolling down my news feed when I heard a knock on my door. Jupiter peeked through the glass window and I laughed before opening the door for him.

Comment sections were filled with thousands chanting Justice for Tessa while calling her the pick me girl. Everywhere she looked, Tessa’s face was plastered. Tessa smiling, Tessa crying in the hospital bed, Tessa trending. And Chloe? Chloe was being mocked, insulted, turned into a meme. She clenched her fists so hard her manicured nails dug into her palms.

A message bubble lit up under his name, cheerful and oblivious. Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.
