When We Fall
“It draws attention. People notice everything.”
Maya froze. She had laughed at a joke she had told during the dinner, a small, harmless laugh. And yet, the words were sharp tinged with judgment, with ownership.
“I… I was just laughing,” she said softly, stepping back.
“You should be careful,” he said, leaning closer, eyes narrowing slightly. “We can’t have people thinking you’re reckless.”
The words weren’t cruel. Not yet. But there was a weight to them, the weight of control.
