Kyle, with a twinkle of mischief in his eyes, said, "Mom, do you have any funny stories from your school days?" Valerie, reminiscing, chuckled, "Oh, plenty! One time, my friends and I tried to organize a surprise birthday party for our teacher, but she accidentally found out and pretended to be surprised. We were so caught off guard!" The kids, captivated by the story, burst into laughter. Kelly teased, "Mom, you were a mischievous one too!" Valerie, joining in the laughter, added, "Well, life is full of little adventures and surprises. Those moments make the best stories, don't they?"

It's pathetic! He dropped that bomb and strutted off before I could fire back. I could hardly believe my ears that such boneheaded words came from the man I have loved for years. His so-called 'cozy winter promos' were just a table with free cups of cheap black coffee and some giveaway gloves out front. The coffee often went cold, untouched, and those gloves ended up in the street bin. However, Seth, of course, thought they were pure gold. Somehow, I was the one cashing in on Lily's ideas!

I start with a small giggle on my face. “I spent my day work all day, mmm at my family company” I laugh. “W-what! That was so boring” Z laughs. “Huh, and I got drunk in the middle of the night, in my bedroom floor, and woke up on couch all the time” I end. Both of us laughing because of the story, our faces are getting red because of the laugh. “Oh, my goodness! That’s insane!” Z tried to stop her laughs and leave a little giggle on her face. “Yeah, my life was insane!” I laugh softly.

She started laughing out loud, as if it was the funniest thing she had heard on a rain-drenched, starving afternoon. “See, how infectious our madness is. No one can escape it. But…okay…listen now. This thing…if you can do this thing, Jaanvi won’t tell him.” she said, her derisive laughter now settling in some sort of a crooked idea. “What?” I said. I just hoped she didn’t come up with the same rotten condition of sending my stories to The Assam Tribune or take up a few private tuition assignments like Nisim and she were doing. I wrote almost every day, trashed those the next day. Well, I didn’t trash them literally, but, felt that all that I had written was nothing more than zilch.

“Let me guess. The time I fell out of a tree trying to rescue a cat?” “And get stuck yourself,” he finished, his grin widening. “Yep, that one made the highlight.” “Unbelievable,” I muttered. “Anything else?” “Oh, plenty,” he said, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “Like the time you tried to ride a bike down a flight of stairs because, and I quote, ‘It’ll totally work.” I groaned louder, hiding my face in my hands. “Why does he share the most humiliating stories?” “Because they’re funny,” he said, his tone light but teasing. “And, if I’m being honest, kind of impressive. I mean, you survived riding a bike down stairs. That’s bold.”

Perhaps because there was something taut beneath the brightness now, something that did not feel like one of her usual fascinations. “What sort of story are we talking about?” I asked. Jenny hesitated just long enough to make the pause deliberate. “The kind people laugh at until they can’t.” I frowned. “That sounds even worse!” “It sounds fun.” “It sounds like trouble.” She grinned. “Those are often the same thing.”

“And I just… write things sometimes… stupid stories…” “Stupid stories?” She nodded. “Silly things.” I tipped my head. “That’s what they are, are they? Silly things?” Another nod, and I raised an eyebrow. “Well, that really is a shame considering I’ve just abandoned my family Christmas to drive back across the country on the back of these silly stories.” She couldn’t gulp a breath quick enough. “I made the cat up,” I continued. “A silly story of my own under the circumstances, so I think that puts us on a par with the falsities, don’t you?”

A message bubble lit up under his name, cheerful and oblivious. Just another one of his dry, stupid jokes—something about his dinner being so terrible he was convinced the restaurant was trying to assassinate him with undercooked chicken. He'd probably attached one of those ridiculous GIFs he was always finding, something animated and silly that was meant to make me laugh.
