The old me would have already been crying, asking her how she could do this to me, voice breaking. Not this me. My teeth clenched so hard they hurt. My whole body trembled with anger. I snatched the flyer out of her hand and slapped her across the face. Tara screamed, clutching her cheek in disbelief. "You hit me? I treat you like my best friend, and you can't even take a joke anymore?" Best friend? I let out a cold laugh.

“You look like someone who could use a good laugh.” I raise an eyebrow. “Do I?” “Yep. Lucky for you, I’m full of stories. Did I ever tell you about the time I outran a tornado in my old pickup truck?” I blink. “I don’t think so.” He launches into a tale so animated and absurd I can’t help but laugh. “...And there I was, wind howlin’, my dog howlin’, and me screamin’ at the top of my lungs like a banshee! But we made it, me and ol’ Duke.”

Their laughter blended easily with the background hum of the restaurant, and for a moment Layla almost forgot this was all pretend. By the time their food arrived, their conversation had drifted into lighter, sillier territory. Layla had found herself leaning forward, laughing at Ethan’s ridiculous office stories—like how one of his coworkers swore his stapler was haunted because it kept disappearing, only to be found in the fridge. “You’re making that up,” she said, cutting into her food. “I swear I’m not,” Ethan said, grinning. “And I was the unlucky guy who found it next to someone’s yogurt cup. Still don’t know how it got there.”

“Gone. Kaput. Over. Days ago. Like I already told you.” Nate’s mouth dropped open again, and he glanced back and forth between me and Matthew, his eyes widening. “Oh — oh shit. Really?” He let out a burst of laughter that shook him enough for coffee to spill down his arm again. “Fuck, ow. But really, you were telling the truth?” What the fuck was so funny? “Yes, I was telling the truth. Gods. I’m not actually a liar unless I have a good reason for it.”

Vera deadpanned, then smiled when he laughed, really laughed, the kind that lit up his whole face and crinkled the corners of his eyes. She liked that sound more than she cared to admit. They fell into an easy rhythm after that. Nothing serious, nothing heavy, just snippets of stories, childhood mischiefs, and mutual teasing that felt like balm after everything that had happened. He told her about sneaking out of his boarding school with his friend and getting caught three blocks away because his friend had a weak bladder and needed to pee every twenty minutes. She countered with the time she’d raced an undercover cop in a stolen motorcycle and only escaped because he’d pulled over to answer

The first woman to draw a prompt burst out laughing as she read it. “Tell us about the most embarrassing thing your mate has ever done.” The entire circle erupted in laughter. Soon stories began pouring out. One woman described how her husband had once fallen asleep during a council meeting and nearly tipped his chair over. Another confessed that her mate had tried to impress her by cooking dinner and ended up burning the stew so badly that the entire house smelled like smoke for days. The laughter was loud and genuine. Even the elders were chuckling. The basket eventually made its way to me.

"Let me know when you want to go, and I'll go with you." "That would be great," he said with a cheerful smile. "Thanks." "Sure." She looked around to see if anyone else might take her up on the offer, but everyone else seemed to be going with the theory of running made you weaker. The conversation waned a little bit, so Michael weighed in with one of his stories. Ellie had already preapproved a few stories he was allowed to tell if the discussion didn't carry the way he wanted it to. She had to make sure none of them were embarrassing, boring, or took too long. This one was about the time they came across a bear on a jog through the woods, so it was fitting, and it ended with her dad playing

He asked, signaling the bartender. We found a small table near the bar, and soon enough, we were deep in conversation, the minutes flying by effortlessly. Liam had this way of making me feel at ease, like I could let my guard down without worrying about judgment. I bet they would shed tears just listening to your story,” he said when I was done with my lies disguised as the truth.
