When he didn’t look at him, he joked about opening the window. Isabelle’s eyes widened as she gasped, and a few seconds later, her wail echoed in the car. “For one moment, let’s have our peace! Give it back,” Jessy yelled, snatching the doll from him and smacking her brother’s head. I groaned, closing my eyes and resting my head on my seat. “Oh, there’s the silence you wanted,” Bethany chuckled, turning on the radio. As if heaven were trying to kill me with a joke, Kelly Clarkson began to fill the car with the same song I had already heard. I sighed, reminding myself again that today was the 25th, not yesterday.

He made me laugh, a genuine, bubbling sound that felt good after the fear. “Your turn,” he challenged, when he finished. “Tell me a joke. Something to keep the darkness at bay.” I thought for a moment. “Okay, okay… What do you call a fake noodle?” He raised an eyebrow, a slight smile playing on his lips. “What?” “An impasta!” I delivered the punchline with a flourish, and he actually laughed, a deep, booming sound that warmed the room. “Alright, alright, that was a good one, for a rookie,” he teased. “My turn. Why did the scarecrow win an award?”

JUNO'S point of view "Why was the ketchup red?" I laughed out loud 'cause I already know the joke but I kept going and pretended I didn't know it. I leaned back on my chair while clutching my stomach. Jace has been telling corny jokes the whole time we're in the restaurant and he's totally unstoppable! "Okay, why?" I answered, nearly tearing up. "Because he saw the salad dressing," I chorused with him and he glared before I burst out laughing once again.

It wasn't just me who heard what Hubert Lock said. His parents heard them too. Laidman Lock immediately raised a hand and smacked Hubert lightly on the arm, irritation creeping into his voice. "What kind of nonsense are you talking about? Who jokes with their wife like that?" Michelle Lock quickly patted the back of my hand and comforted me softly. "Crystal, don't take it to heart. Maxwell somehow managed to burn his marshmallow within seconds. I stared at the blackened lump. "How?" "I like them crispy." "They’re black." "They’re… extra crispy." Alec handed him another one. "You have the cooking skills of a raccoon." "I don’t even know what that means." "It means stop touching the fire." "I refuse." I laughed so hard I nearly dropped my own marshmallow. Watching them together was strangely comforting. They teased each other constantly, but beneath every joke was years of deep affection. "You two…" I said, smiling.

I asked him. “What's so funny?” he asked, irritation laced in his voice. “You're so funny, uncle. Sometimes, I wonder why you didn't go into comedy.” sarcasm dripped as I spoke. “Your highly respected Karl Palmer has been arrested and you are here laughing. What's so funny?” “Why would anyone dare to arrest Karl Palmer? Can't you just think of anything else that could sound real?” he spat. “You know what else won't be real to you? Your life in jail,” I countered.

Al laughed as he put his hands in his pockets before he again leaned on the wall, "But to shift I'd have to get naked. Isn't that also moms-and-dads only?"
