We worked through the night, coffee turning to energy drinks as the sun rose. We were surrounded by printouts and notes and half-formed theories when Vivienne suddenly leaned forward.
“Wait,” she said, pulling up an article on ancient spiritual practices. “Look at this. It says that supernatural entities don’t actually want death or souls—those are just currencies they understand. What they really crave is acknowledgment. Recognition. Being remembered and honored.”
I leaned over her shoulder, reading the text. “So instead of a life… we could offer remembrance?”
